Kaleidoscope Recs: the Dyke’s Guide to music at Sydney WorldPride

Since y’all loved our Dyke’s Guide to theatre and art a couple of weeks ago, we’ve found another arty dyke to give you some recommendations for the simply overwhelming amount of things to do at Sydney WorldPride.

Bec is a super cool dyke who loves a good gig. She runs a middle-of-the-night radio segment, so it’s safe to say she’s a bit of a music nerd too. Check out her very cool, and sometimes educational, recommendations for WorldPride music events (click titles for tix):

Ailan Songs Project

The Ailan (Island) Songs Project is an initiative by Indigenous Songkeeper Jessie Lloyd that explores popular historical songs from the Torres Strait between Australia and Papua New Guinea in the coral sea. The Project was developed in collaboration with senior Torres Strait songwomen to tell the history of the Torres Straits from pearl diving days to the migration of islanders to mainland Australia. This is a fantastic opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous festival-goers to experience a history-telling through an island-reggae reworking of traditional songs. This performance is a part of Marri Madung Butbut, a six-day-long First Nations gathering space where everyone is welcome to experience the rainbow heart of the oldest surviving culture on the planet.

This is an accessible, family-friendly event welcome to all, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can access discounted tickets through the Sydney WorldPride MobTix program.

The Ailan Songs Project is at Carriageworks Bay 20, at 4:30pm on 24 February

Seymour Nights @ Sydney WorldPride

Seymour Centre’s contemporary music program Seymour Nights is running a special WorldPride music series over the course of the festival. A contemporary music series ranging from pop, disco, emo, and drag DJs this is a sizeable tasting plate of local queer musical talent. Highlights include: regular on the sapphic Sydney club circuit Mowgli May playing a blend of electronic and RnB dancefloor favourites on 28 Feb, and Filipino/Australian rising star Chela brings us her heartbreak-pop on the final day of the series on Saturday 4 March.

This is a free event held in the leafy, summery surrounds of the Seymour courtyard with a different food truck appearing each night.

Seymour Nights is at the Seymour Centre from 18 February to 4 March

Irregular Fit DJ Masterclass

Irregular Fit, the DIY arts platform made by and for Bla(c)k, Brown and POC folk, has teamed up with newly-renovated nightlife favourite, The Abercrombie, to bring you a special WorldPride version of their ever-growing DJ masterclasses. Irregular Fit has been making DJ expertise and culture accessible since 2018, teaching people who face challenges when accessing the music scene how to navigate a space that is traditionally full of gatekeeping. As always, Irregular Fit are prioritising people who identify as part of QTIPOC and part of the LGBTQ+ community for this masterclass.

This is a free event but is only being offered to successful applicants. Applications are open until 23rd February via the Irregular Fit Instagram.

Irregular Fit is at The Abercrombie at 6pm on 27 February

Sydney WordPride Closing Concert

The closing concert is going to be a highlight of the festival for music fans, including the likes of Ava Max, Kim Petras, MUNA, Keiynan Lonsdale, G Flip, Peach PRC, Alter Boy, BVT, Vetta Borne, and more. It is Kim Petras’ only performance in this WorldPride, and the line-up looks stacked to please local women-loving-women. This is a huge event, with stacks of food and drink options on-site to round out this 17-day WorldPride festival. While it does come in on the pricier side of events happening this year, this is one to splurge on with plenty of exclusive appearances from international queer favourites.

This is an 18+ event. The closing concert is also participating in Sydney WorldPride’s Mobtix program, providing discounted tickets for Indigenous patrons.

The WorldPride closing concert is at the Domain Phillip Precinct at 3pm on 5 March

Rebecca Cushway is a radio host blessed with the most luxurious radio voice in the Inner West and burdened with the ability to do everything everywhere all at once. She’s not nearly as smart as the undergrads she tutors at UTS think she is.
